My first grade teacher looked like Linda Carter and my fourth grade teacher brought a set of cow lungs to school. Those two memories merged in my brain and this story started to take shape. I figured first graders were too young to do the things that happen in this story, so I made us fourth graders. I tried as hard as could to think like a fourth grade boy for this story. To my astonishment, but not to the astonishment of either my mother or my wife, I discovered that I may never have stopped thinking like a fourth grader in the first place. This was a fun story to write and I was so glad when I created Alicia Snitch, because she really drives the story and has emerged as one of my favorite characters in a long time.
